Donald Trump becomes the first person on Earth to receive a FIFA peace award at the World Cup draw
Besides the draw for the World Cup 2026 group stage, another notable moment was President Trump receiving the peace award. The award, introduced last month by FIFA President Gianni Infantino, was created to honor individuals with global impact. At today’s World Cup draw in Washington, D.C., Trump was presented with a gold trophy featuring hands holding the Earth.
The U.S. President said after receiving the prize: “This is truly one of the great honors of my life.” Trump claimed he had ended wars and “saved millions and millions of lives,” making the world a safer place. “The United States, one year ago, was not doing too well, and now I have to say we’re the hottest country anywhere in the world - and we’re going to keep it that way,” he added.
In an even more surprising moment, the president suggested that American football should change its name because soccer is the true form of football. “This is football - there is no question. We have to come up with another name for the other one. It really does not make sense when you think about it.”
Gianni Infantino said Trump received the award for his “exceptional and extraordinary actions” around the globe. “This is what we want from a leader - a leader that cares about the people,” the FIFA President added. Previously, Donald Trump missed out on the Nobel Peace Prize, which was awarded to Venezuela's leader María Corina Machado.
In 2026, the United States will host the World Cup alongside fellow North American countries Canada and Mexico. The tournament will take place in 11 cities, including Atlanta, Boston, Dallas, Houston, Kansas City, Los Angeles, Miami, New York, Philadelphia, San Francisco, and Seattle. According to research, the 2026 World Cup is expected to attract 1.2 million visitors, generate billions of dollars in economic activity for the country, and boost President Trump’s prestige - as he enters his second year back in the White House since returning earlier this year.
