Jamie Carragher slams Ruben Amorim: 'He’s not good enough to be Manchester United manager'

After the 1-1 draw against Leeds last night, Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim launched a furious post-match interview, directly criticising the club’s hierarchy. Shortly afterwards, Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher weighed in with strong criticism of the Portuguese coach.

Manchester United have now drawn their last two matches against Wolves and Leeds, both ending 1-1. The run of results has placed Amorim under increasing pressure. Speaking after the Leeds game, the 40-year-old manager aimed his frustration at the media and the club’s leadership.

Amorim said: "Stop with that. I came here to be the manager of Manchester United… not to be the coach of Manchester United. That is clear. I know my name is not [Thomas] Tuchel, it's not [Antonio] Conte, it's not [Jose] Mourinho, but I am the manager of Manchester United and it's going to be like this for 18 months or when the board decides to change".

He also referenced the scouting department and urged the sporting director to “do his job”, while pointing directly at the club’s senior figures. Following the interview, reports emerged suggesting growing tension behind the scenes at Old Trafford.

Jamie Carragher later joined the debate and criticised Amorim’s remarks. The former Liverpool centre-back suggested there were only two possible reasons for the outburst: either Amorim has not been backed by the board in the January transfer window, or the club’s leadership is questioning his frequent changes in tactical systems.

Man United are struggling with their injuries and absences

Carragher said: "No matter what it is, I don't think he is in any position whatsoever to be questioning the people who appointed him. He's not good enough. He's not good enough to be Manchester United's manager. He's barely competent enough to be a Premier League manager right now".

Addressing Amorim’s comments about the scouting department and sporting director, Carragher argued that the manager has little justification for such demands. He pointed out that United have spent more than £200 million on attacking reinforcements, yet failed to prioritise a midfielder, wing-back or centre-back. With the club not competing in the Champions League, Carragher added that further significant spending is unrealistic after such heavy investment.

Carragher also warned that Amorim could face a similar fate to Enzo Maresca, who parted ways with Chelsea last week. He noted that Maresca had delivered tangible success, including a Club World Cup title, the Conference League trophy and a return to the Champions League. Without comparable results, Carragher said Amorim is “in no position whatsoever to speak like that”.

Manchester United will next travel to face Burnley on 8 January, before returning to Old Trafford to host Brighton in the FA Cup on 11 January.
