Lamine Yamal surpasses Kylian Mbappé’s Champions League record

With his assist for Jules Koundé last night, Lamine Yamal set another milestone, becoming the player with the most goal contributions before turning 18. His tally has now reached 14 G/A, surpassing the nine-year record previously held by Kylian Mbappé.

Barcelona defeated Eintracht Frankfurt 2-1 in the Champions League thanks to two headers from Jules Kounde. Aside from the French defender, Lamine Yamal also shone with an assist, alongside England star Marcus Rashford. The 18-year-old delivered an excellent left-footed cross to Kounde, who headed home the winning goal for Barcelona.

That assist raised Yamal’s Champions League tally to 7 goals and 7 assists, overtaking Mbappé’s 13 goal contributions as the highest total before turning 18. The Spanish superstar could even extend this record, as he will only celebrate his 19th birthday in July 2026, and Barcelona still have plenty of matches ahead.

However, Yamal did not end the night happily, as he was substituted in the 89th minute along with Alejandro Balde. When asked about the youngster, Coach Hansi Flick said:

"Lamine was a little disappointed when he came on, but he had a yellow card and we needed fresh legs. These are three very important points. We controlled the game; it was a very difficult match. They defended very deep. We have to focus on ourselves and get six more points."

Lamine Yamal will out for the next Champions League match

Yamal will miss the next match, as he has accumulated three yellow cards in the group stage, resulting in an automatic one-match suspension. Their upcoming opponent, Slavia Prague, have yet to win a game and sit 32nd in the standings with just 3 points.

After facing Slavia Prague, Barcelona will play their final group-stage match against FC Copenhagen, with both fixtures taking place in late January 2026. At the moment, Barcelona sit 14th with 10 points from six matches. With two beats-from-bottom opponents ahead, Barcelona are likely to progress, and finishing higher could give them a more favourable draw.

Barcelona will now prepare for their next La Liga match against Osasuna on December 14th. They remain top of the league with a four-point lead over Real Madrid and will then face third-placed Villarreal on December 21st. If Barcelona win both matches, they will finish the year as La Liga’s number-one team.
