Nottingham Forest goalkeeper John Victor leaves the pitch in tears after serious mistake

John Victor has impressed at Nottingham Forest since taking over the starting goalkeeper role from Matz Sels. However, in the recent defeat to Aston Villa, the Brazilian endured a nightmare outing, conceding three goals, making a costly error and suffering an injury.

Nottingham Forest began their 2026 campaign with an away trip to Aston Villa. Given the contrast in performance, the defeat came as little surprise. The focus of the match, however, was not on any Villa player, but on Forest goalkeeper John Victor.

The 29-year-old was making just his fifth Premier League appearance, facing a potent Villa attack, and was unable to keep his side in the game. In first-half stoppage time, Ollie Watkins opened the scoring with a strike from outside the box. Three minutes after the restart, John McGinn doubled Villa’s advantage.

The decisive moment came in the 73rd minute when John Victor rushed out of his penalty area and allowed McGinn to complete his brace, effectively sealing a 3-1 victory for Villa. Just five minutes later, the goalkeeper picked up an injury and was forced off the pitch in tears.

Before the substitution was confirmed, Sky Sports co-commentator Andy Hinchcliffe criticised the Forest goalkeeper for his error. "John Victor, what on earth are you doing? Stay in your area, let your defenders recover. A terrible, terrible decision that may well have cost his team the game."

Forest captain Morgan Gibbs-White said after the match: "I am sure the gaffer is going to get us working this week," he said. "We will have a game-plan and we'll aim to get three points. It's a difficult period. We've got games coming up, we just need to get points on the table. You want to be clear of it. We have been in this sort of battle before. We know what it takes to get out of it."

John Victor joined Forest from Botafogo in the summer of 2025 for an undisclosed fee. Initially signed as the club’s third-choice goalkeeper, he had to wait until December to make his first Premier League start. Forest now sit 17th in the table and will face 18th-placed West Ham in their next match.
